NFL: New Rules

There will be several new rules and rules changes in evidence this year, two of which are particularly significant. First, the force-out rule is history. In part, following the college rule, a receiver must come down with both feet in bounds--regardless of whether he is hit while in the air--thus eliminating one of the most controversial of judgment calls. Secondly, the 5-yard incidental face mask penalty is gone. Tacklers grabbing and immediately releasing the face will not be flagged, but special attention will be paid to tacklers and runners alike who grab and twist the mask. This infraction will carry the usual 15 yard walk-off.

Also, this year one defensive player will be permitted to have a radio in his helmet, which will be marked with a green dot on the back. This will allow coaches to relay defensive signals and provide directions to the nearest strip clubs for after the game recreation.

Good to be back,
